Sometimes you just can't hold it all inside. You have to just let it all out. These monster friends of mine have shown me this. These guys missed the "L" back to Brooklyn by mere seconds, and now they have to wait for 33 minutes till the next one shows up. They were nice enough once you got them talking.

George(bottom right), just got accepted to NYU to study Biology. He likes baby Tigers. Eric(top left), is his bud from CT. He's just down for the weekend to have a "rockin" time. Sara(not pictured), is Eric's girlfriend. And she hates it when he talks about CT like he's embarrassed he lives there. "He loves his job at the Key Foods", according to her. I'm not so convinced. He also smelled like corn dogs. Felix(middle), just jumped in the picture. No one knew that guy. He sure did think Nate Robinson was the next Allen Iverson, if you know what I mean?

That's my friend Amber on the top right. The chandelier hangs in the middle of the room throwing sparkling points of light all over its contents. Geoff always seems to notice the NBADL awards Justin he has won over the years:
"Defensive Player of the Year 02, 03, 06, 08", "Comeback player of the Year 06"
"6th Man of the Year 08, 09"
"Western Division Champion 03, 06, 07"
"Eastern Division Champion 09"

They sit on the mantel above the 6 ft tall Gas fireplace(turned on low). The deep red, satin window treatments wave with the draft of the apartment. They always remind Geoff of his trip to Nepal back in 2003(you know what I'm talking about). The grizzly bear rug feels comfortable between Geoff's toes. He continuously rubs his feet all over the area below the daybed upon which he sits.

As Edmund(the butler) brings Geoff another Pabst, a spark flies between them. And Geoff, being scared of electricity, drops the beer on the bear(the fourth he's dropped now).

Geoff: Crap! Sorry.....I dropped my beer on the bear.

Justin: .........

Edmund just leans down and picks up the glass, then continues to the fireplace and puts the Comeback Player of the Year upright again. Back to the kitchen.

Geoff: So... what's going on?

Justin: mmeh?

G: Ok......well......wanna watch The Cutting Edge?

Justin walks over and knocks the Comeback Player of the Year award over. He's still pissed about the cheap shot The "Birdman" gave him back in the 03 championship game. For those of you not aware of the Trachtenburg Family please check them out they are wild bunch. It was Rachels 16th birthday, I know bizarre right, but if you new the family it would seem a little more normal. This pic was of my favorite scene of the night. It included fairy dust, dancing numbers, dancing carebears and I think a giant bananna? Elvis Costello and I were observing in the back.

Das teams up with Sonia Dawkins of Prism Dance Theatre

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vaIPXEOMxGs/SxU1HzBkPjI/AAAAAAAAADc/uFbi9Uv3iGA/s320/-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410288935427653170" />

Living in Seattle and hungry for some Das? Blank Canvases was a series of weekly performances Geoff and I did in the fall of 08' in Seattle at Moxie. They were ambient-experimental nights of music. Recording some Moon Doom Music with our good friend Robb Davidson. I found the following text up on the computer...enjoy.

Dear Friends,
I'm sure you've received numerous bogus offers from someone in a foreign country who has been trying to contact you to give you a fortune if only you would give them an administration fee or your information. Some of it even looks legit. Most is in broken English, which I guess is supposed to lend authenticity. However, I think I've finally found one that really is!
My name is Ndugood. I am a wealthy Nigerian prince who loves the jazz of music.

I am seeking your help to move $200,000,000 from my checking account here in Nigeria to the United States. I too love the jazz of music and am planning to flee to America to open many jazz clubs at which I would like you to perform.

You will receive $42,000 a night, plus a meal.

My new "Tribal Village Vanguard" clubs will be of great success and you will become rich like the rest of American jazz musicians.

I have already applied for building exemptions to allow thatched stages and the spearing of live animals. But I desperately need your help. My tribe, the Swindlisi, a peaceful jazz-loving people, has been horribly oppressed by the ruling military junta, which despises the jazz of music.

My father, an exiled king and booking agent, was recently imprisoned under the draconian "three gigs - you're out" law, and now I must flee my beloved country with all of my improbable wealth - But I need help in moving it.

I have so much money that it will not fit in the allotted two checked bags and one carry-on. I am therefore want to transfer the money through your ATM system (The Nigerian ATM system cannot exchange international currencies; it only converts "antelope to money"). So please to just provide me with your full name and address, social security number, bank account and PIN numbers, and you will become incredibly (literally) rich from playing many jazz gigs.

(Note: normal Nigerian Musician's Union rules apply: three hour performances, two 15 minute breaks allowed, musicians to provide their own mosquito nets, one open fire per bandstand, one free meal plus anything you kill).

Act now. The first ten musicians to respond will receive a free copy of the Nigeria's Greatest Jazz Hits CD, by our beloved 'Disoriented' Gillespie Band, which contains the hits:

The Night Has A Thousand Flies
Goodbye Shrunken Head
Here's That Rainy Season
Just Tribesmen (Lovers No More)
Take the 'A' Trail
When I Fall In Quicksand
Half-Nelson Mandella
Blue Monkey
Leopard Skins and Moonbeams
Blue Mombossa
Almost Like Being In Lagos
Sunny Side of the Goatpath
I Didn't Know What Century It Was

Thank you for your many help.

Your inordinately wealthy Nigerian brother...

Prince Ndugoo

Secret Show tonight in Seattle

Super secret Das 3 show tonight in Seattle. This concept is very foreign to most west coast lifers. There are many different perspectives one can take when approaching these new found realities. I have chosen to embrace it and enjoy being surrounded by busy energies. Take for example riding the subway. I board the L train at the Morgan stop in Brooklyn and am immediately bombarded with people screaming, hipsters rockin their ipod, babies crying, sketchy folks staring and three kids huddled around some video game player. Its times like these that one could flee but no I ride. I ride towards the city and stop by stop my new found friends and I slowly begin to accept each other and become more and more comfortable. Eventually we hit the Bedford stop, last chance to get off before dropping down the rabbit hole to Manhattan. Doors open and shut and we are off. All inhabitants of the train are secretly off to a plethora of different activities but for a short period of time a sense of community / family exists. New York binds people together in this most unexpected and beautiful way.

Who is Cady Wire?

Perhaps you are asking yourself who is Cady Wire, and why are they opening for Das in Seattle? Well, they are a band we met in New York right immediately after moving here. As it turns out they were hitting the road and moving to Seattle to experience all that the west coast has to offer. The group is led by Sam Riley whose lyrics and delivery are flat out amazing! This is a band that all in Seattle needs to take in and enjoy while they are there. When the opportunity arose for us to have an opener I jumped at getting them on board. Musical styles are different then that of Das but the message is the same, true and heartfelt. Please check them out and don't show up late to the show!!:)
Cady Wire Myspace page

Holy Crap!!!

I finally did it. Things are really cooking with the new tunes after several months of familiarizing ourselves, and digging into the little particulars of each instruments role. Wow! It sounds sick! My personal favorite has to be Keeper Of The Knives. The only way to truly describe this song is to compare it to a roller coaster through a really large car wash. It is dripping wet, and will jerk your soul!!! I'm so excited to play this tune right now that I can't get it out of my head! Looking very forward to next weeks shows in the NW, and seeing friends. We have planned for some pretty amazing stuff.

First off, the music is going to consist of tons of music from the record, as well as a bunch of new material written here in good 'ol Brooklyn. We have been busy. These tunes kick ass! no doubt.

Second, we have special guests galore. B-Nasty will be mixing live video throughout the shows. If you haven't seen this yet, be very excited! It gives the show quite the magical dimension. Lis Anna Christensen will also be making an appearance, playing the love of Elliot Prototype's life.

Third, do you know who Elliot is? Well,... he is the character our album Don't Forget Where the Sun Set's, is based upon. The score for this album follows Elliot's last day. This once great writer; launched into fame and fortune by his best selling novel Don’t Forget Where the Sun Sets, Has fallen into desolation and despair. Haunted by the loss of his one true love and the Monster that is the city, you follow this man’s descent into madness. Elliot’s dreams bring him to some of the most beautiful places ever imagined. But reality thrashes back, forcing him into darkness. Aided by his typewriter and his many vices, Elliot takes a journey that would be a whirlwind of emotions for any person.

Now you know...

But you can always learn more on our website. You can read the back story of Elliot's life (Meet Elliot), which is still being updated to this day. As well as read the original short story itself This Last Day, written by Geoff Larson and Neal Barbour. There's also pictures from the recording session, and tons of other stuff.

Fourth, We have a Comic to go with the album! Every copy bought over the first month will come with the first addition comic, Don't Forget Where the Sun Sets. We only have 500 of these, so be quick. Michael Wallenfels has been working with the group for the last year to conceptualize this beast. It has been quite exciting! And his artwork is amazing. We will have some larger prints available at The Triple Door on Sept 2nd. But please buy this great album!

Fifth, I can't wait to see Seattle again! All Right! Boo Yah! And all that.

Geoff

Last day at the print shop

Yesterday, Geoff and I cruised over to Long Island City to pick up the finished printing of Don't Forget Where The Sun Sets. But so much I get to see and experience.

Beyond all that, I get to take my upright bass to my roof and play any time I want. This very view is my inspiration for our newest song, Red Giant.

Don't Forget Where the Sun Sets.

Geoff

Street Signs Can also be amazing!

For the love of God! That was the case on Saturday night in Bellingham where complications befell upon the vibraphone. It was, lets say....Kaput!! This put Das into a position to perform without perhaps our most characteristic instrument. With the assistance of local stud John Meloy, we charted off into some old skool grooves of yore. I guess they weren't ancient, but it was pretty fun as it always is to jump into old material you haven't played in a while. Geoff was a delight to play with, as he stepped into bizarre rhythms and haunting melodies.

The initial approach to the nights music was to be pretty free...which for the most part it was, but when John and Josh team up...you can't avoid the crushing spaz-funk these two wield together. I was having a blast to say the least.

That being said...I still miss my vibes, and am looking forward to Saturday night at the Triple Door.

Time to strap on the helmet!!!

When you spend as much time together as the four of us do...you need breaks! The musty smell it brought with it. He loved looking at the road map in front of him. The next world was right there! He could see it..... He loved the rhythm of it. The sound would remind him of the trains he used to jump many years ago, with the constant beating of metal. The past could find its way right into the now, and the future was always just one stroke away. There were no mistakes. Just a new beginning. He always felt the most alive in the depths of darkness. His creative mind always worked harder when he was looking out into the black. Whiffs of smoke up into the darkness, headlights changing the features of the scape, the hum of the city, the pungent smells, and the people. The people and the darkness were always more on the edge the deeper you went. But the pendulum would always swing back to the dawn.

The dawn brought even more. That's when the city started crashing into itself. People going to work, ants gathering food, getting breakfast, take out the trash, spiders building a web, drink coffee, run, yell...... To him, this all lead back to the night. "We all started there". Imagination is powerful.

He often would sit in the middle of the city, looking at the 5 stars he could see. Thinking of his family trips deep into the mountains, he missed the billions of stars he watched in the Milky Way. Delphinios was his favorite constellation. The moon would take hours of watching. And the rest of the world would just be sitting there beyond sight, never knowing...

There was always so much wonder in that darkness, and you never know what will come out on the other side. Her very presence in the room would give him chills ever since the first time he met her. This time came at a small theater down by the waterfront. She was apart of the company who was doing a small run in the room. As soon as he saw her, his eyes never strayed. She had taken him away from his crazy existence. Billy K had told him this show would change his life. And boy was he right!

She had never read his book, and had only heard his name in passing. This he loved. So many have been praising him for things he felt he didn't deserve. And now this could be real.

Her love of the world, people, life, and......everything was so fantastic to him... She loved to dance. Her movements were all so fluid and magical. Her conversations were exhilarating. He would tell her over and over again, "You are a magician to me". The clothes she wore would always show off her beautiful hips and back. Making him beg to see more. Her curly dark hair always hit her shoulders just how he loved. When she would lay next to him, he could just lay in her hair all day long smelling its beautiful scent. She pushed herself against him just how he liked. Kissed him with passion. She pushed him to places he never expected.

Dancing at the dinner theater. Walking the streets feeding the homeless. Talking sports with her father, then attending his funeral. Writing for the memorial. Meditating. Jogging. Camping on the beach. Jazz. Water........He was always scared of water. All he talked about, for quite some time, was the way the public viewed him in relation to his book. Elliot just loved the way humans would stereotype him, without any thought what so ever. So he would just talk endlessly about the beauty of baseball, music, history,....anything but the characters or story of his book. All he would say about his novel was that he "created some pretty F'ed up guys, and they relate to me, baseball, music, history,....".

The public wanted these "guys" to be real so very badly, but he would have nothing of it. Elliot spoke to the world, and the world wanted more. He touched so many without anything even close to that intention. He just wanted to disappear from their eyes. But those characters always had a enormous hold on the young Elliot. He just didn't want to admit it. They were all him. And apparently the world as well. The grip kept growing stronger.

But his life was sent in a different direction.....

New musical friends

What a weekend for Das! Saturday night was absolutely fantastic. We had the privilege of playing a raucous opening set for Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey at our homebase in Portland; the Goodfoot Lounge. The night blew up with a rowdy crowd ready to get down to some wacked out instrumental sounds. From load in/soundcheck the two bands just had a good feel to them. Everything flowed so damn well from the setup to the compositions, that we all had a feeling things were going to go our way that night. Sunday had the two groups heading north for a show at the Tractor in Seattle. Again the music was from my perspective at the top of the game. We even were graced with a stellar opening set from Stebmo who led off the evening perfectly with a solo showing of some downtempo grooves using drum machines and rhodes. As the night ended I remember just feeling extremely satisfied with the whole event. All the folks that made the Sunday night trek out from there cozy Seattle homes were treated to a great night. Thanks again to Brian, Chris, Pete, and Josh of JFJO and Steve of Stebmo for giving everything they could musically to make the night one to remember.

~Justin

Meet Elliot volume 1

Elliot Prototype is an award winning author known all over the world. His novel, "Don't forget where the Sun sets", has been picked for the Circle of Excellence award, Gladiator's platinum medal, The Newell/Barbour border of review, Miulli's Palm award, among many others. To say the least, this novel was nothing short of amazing. And the critics wanted to find what was hiding inside this amazing writer. He entered the writing scene with such a storm, no one knew what to do with this mysterious character. Elliot would not attend any traditional sort of book signing and he would refuse interviews to all,.... accepting his favorite critic Billy K. So the world would be forced to sift through what Billy and Elliot talked about. And these conversations rarely had to do with the writing of Prototype. This seemed to be the theme of the evening with songs blazing out like wildfire! Other highlights included an epic Film Noir, and (I can't believe I'm saying it) a bad ass version of Impressions!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the show, and we'll see you in Portland tonight!

JC

Published author.....me? Hell no but wait am I? This blogging thing is somewhat pretentious to think anyone cares what I have to say but lets give it a shot anyways. First topic of discussion....last night.....Geoff and I have begun our run of duo shows playing every Thursday night at Moxie in Seattle. We have called the evening "Blank Canvases" and gone into each performance with, you guessed, no material. Been a little frightening a couple times but we have persevered. Its one of those things as a musician that seems to build character. All you have to rely on is your instincts and faith that whatever you are creating in the moment will find some sort of resolution. I have been interested in performing this style for awhile and was thrilled when Geoff decided to join me in the experiment.

Now we roll to Olympia.

~Justin
